Frida Kahlo has been transformed from a relatively little- known painter during her lifetime into an iconic international artist. Millions of viewers find connections to her distinctive style and apparent willingness to flout social conventions. Kahlo’s self-portraits appear on t-shirts, mugs, memes, votive candles and even socks. Her blue home in Coyoacan is regularly mobbed by visitors who treat their journey as a personal pilgrimage. Behind the hype lie more complex realities largely ignored by the movies, books and memorabilia dedicated to her. This talk will explore lesser-known aspects of Kahlo’s life, with an emphasis on art that was personally important.
