"She’s an amazing musician whose passion for music is infectious."— A Performance by Sarah the FiddlerThe Midterms: What Just Happened and Why?
Price range: $0.00 through $10.00
Historically, midterm elections serve as a tough referendum on the sitting president, usually favoring the opposition party. But did this cycle follow the traditional script, or did the electorate chart an unexpected course?
In this workshop, we’ll unpack the key drivers behind the results. We will analyze whether Republicans sustained their 2024 momentum among Hispanic voters, measure the real impact of unprecedented mid-decade redistricting, and examine what these outcomes signal for the 2028 presidential race. Join us for a clear, data-driven breakdown of where the political landscape stands and where it’s headed next.

Marc Lendler is a Professor Emeritus of Government at Smith College, specializing in American political institutions, constitutional law, national elections, and the First Amendment. Before entering academia, Lendler spent nearly a decade working in blue-collar factory jobs while actively participating in labor activism. He earned his B.A. from Antioch College in 1970 and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University in 1987, teaching at Bennington College before joining the Smith College faculty.
Lendler’s research focuses on legal history and freedom of expression, highlighted by his book Gitlow v. New York: Every Idea an Incitement (University of Kansas Press, 2012). The work provides an in-depth analysis of the landmark 1925 Supreme Court free speech case involving Benjamin Gitlow, a radical socialist prosecuted under New York’s Criminal Anarchy Law for publishing a “Left Wing Manifesto.” Lendler examines the clash between the legal “bad tendency” doctrine used to convict Gitlow and Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.’s famous dissent asserting that “every idea is an incitement.” The book highlights how the case ultimately served as a foundational milestone in constitutional history by establishing that First Amendment free speech protections apply to state governments through the Fourteenth Amendment.
