Meanding Through Time: The Connecticut River’s Strange Journeys After Lake Hitchcock

– with Richard Little

$20.00

In-Person
Saturday May 10, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
GCC Main Campus

The Connecticut River in Franklin County has many mysteries! Just under the French King Bridge it takes a 90 degree bend to the west, ignoring its intended southerly path to the sea! Along this westerly trend are found riverbed holes over 100 feet deep, plus an abandoned waterfall sculpted cliff at Barton Cove. The River even went meandering into Greenfield’s Meadows—leaving a meander channel and oxbow lake (now swamp) along College Drive. Amazing and unexpected! Join geology professor Richard Little to follow the ancient paths of the Connecticut and discover the reasons behind these intriguing river mysteries that are the result of Glacial Lake Hitchcock. Our journey will take us from Greenfield Community College to Gill and Northfield. We will have short walks to view landscapes and study them on maps to understand how and why the land around us has changed. No transportation provided (meet at GCC and plan to drive your own car to our desinations); bring a snack and drink.
