Connecting More Dots in Greenfield’s Black History

– with Carol Aleman

Suggested Price: $5.00 per person

In-Person
Tuesday, May 19, 3-4 p.m.
GCC Main Campus

Suggested Price: $5.00 per person

In this workshop, you will learn about recent discoveries in the continuing search to document Greenfield's black history. These involve a special doorway in the old American House, a well-preserved glass plate, two celebrity performance jackets, and more. Many of us have heard of John Putnam and his legacy as a popular black barber, musician, and caller for dances, but who were some of the others whose stories have faded over time? What did they do, and do well, and why was their place in the community so critical? Please come and share your insights and stories, as we acknowledge some of the contributions of Greenfield's black community, from the mid-1840s forward.

Carol Aleman grew up on a dairy farm in Shelburne, graduated as a traditional student from GCC in 1971 and earned an undergraduate degree in Classics at UMass in 1995. She has continued taking courses the past three decades while spending most of her working years on the staff of the Five College Consortium in Amherst. When she retired in 2018, she discovered a love for local history and began researching Greenfield’s Black community. Her volunteer work at the Historical Society of Greenfield is in its seventh year; she is currently its president. Carol continues to serve on GCC’s Alumni Council and is a member of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association’s Library Committee.
