John Bollard will read from and discuss his new book Protesting with Rosa Parks: From Stagecoaches to Driving While Black, which recounts the experiences of nearly 100 Black passengers who, like Rosa Parks, refused to give up their dignity or their seats while traveling throughout the country from 1832 to 2023. This oft-forgotten history gives us a picture of the central role played by protest against Jim Crow segregation in the development of this country.

John Bollard has taught at Harvard, Yale, Universities of Massachusetts and Connecticut, Smith and Mt. Holyoke Colleges. He was managing editor of the African American National Biography project at Harvard’s W.E.B. Du Bois Institute, which produced African American Lives (2004) and the eight volume African American National Biography (2008).
