Robert Strong Woodward: The Life and Art of a New England Painter
Robert Strong Woodward spent the majority of his working life as a landscape artist in western New England and southern Vermont. He was born on May 11, 1885, in Northampton, Massachusetts and died in Buckland, Massachusetts, on June 26, 1957 at the age of 72. Adversity—in the form of physical pain, limitations in mobility and devastating fires—was to be a lifelong companion, yet he was able to create over 800 works of art, primarily in oil and pastel.
About the Presenter
Polly Anderson grew up in Buckland with a family tradition of picnicking hiking, and horseback riding through the environs that Woodward lovingly captured in his paintings. She graduated from UMass with a Masters in Art Education and taught Elementary Art for 35 years in the Mohawk Trail Regional School District. Janet Gerry is from Buckland, Massachusetts. During her childhood she lived two houses down from Robert Strong Woodward’s last studio, a circumstance that piqued her early interest in the artist. She was educated at local schools and Middlebury College and received her MFA from Bay Path University.
